Summary: This study provides the first metagenomic evidence supporting the presence of Toxoplasma gondii DNA within human atheroma plaques. The findings suggest a possible etiological role of this protozoan parasite in the development of atherosclerosis. These results emphasize the importance of investigating infectious agents as potential contributors to chronic cardiovascular diseases.
